SUBJECT MATTER
The 8th International Workshop on Plasma Edge Theory in Fusion Devices
was organised by Helsinki University of Technology and VTT (Technical Research
Centre of Finland). Like the seven preceding workshops, this workshop addressed
plasma theory of the edge region in magnetic confinement fusion devices.
It reflected the present status of the theory for the boundary layer of
fusion plasmas. The emphasis was on the development of theory and of appropriate
numerical methods and on self-consistent modelling of experimental data
(including also empirical elements). The following topics were covered
by invited and contributed lectures:
-
Basic edge plasma theory
-
Models of special phenomena and edge control
-
Integrated edge plasma modelling
The workshop presented seven invited papers and contributed papers. Contributed
papers were mainly presented as posters. Invited papers were presented
also as posters. The list of invited speakers was as follows:
S. Benkadda, CEA Cadarache: The Physics of ExB Shear, Zonal Flows, and
Large Scale Transport Events.
Yu. Chutov, T.S. Univ. of Kiev: Self-Consistent Dusty Sheaths in Edge
Plasmas.
T. Fülöp, Chalmers U.T.: Nonlinear Neoclassical Theory for
Tokamak Edge Plasmas.
T. Hayashi, NIFS: Island Formation for Finite Pressure Equilibria in
Non-Axisymmetric Tori.
S. Sipilä, HUT: Recent Developments in Monte Carlo Codes for Edge
Plasma Studies.
P. Snyder, GA San Diego: ELMs and the Role of Current Driven Instabilities
in the Edge.
PROCEEDINGS
The invited and accepted contributed papers will be included in the proceedings
of the workshop and published in the journal “Contributions to Plasma Physics”.
The maximum length is limited to 12 pages for invited papers, and to 6
pages for contributed papers.
The format of “Contributions to Plasma Physics”, available from
the journal's Instructions
to authors web page, should be used in the manuscripts. The manuscripts
can be e-mailed to pet8@hut.fi as a Postscript or PDF file, with the LaTeX
file and figures in separate files. The figures should be in Encapsulated
Postscript (EPS) format. This is very important for correct reproduction.
HOW TO GET TO THE HOTEL
AND CONFERENCE SITE
Dipoli Congress Centre and Radisson SAS Hotel Espoo are located within
200 m of each other in Otaniemi, Espoo, about 25 km southwest from Helsinki-Vantaa
International Airport. The travel time from the Airport to the hotel is
20-25 minutes by taxi, which is by far the easiest way to get there and
is thus recommended.
The minibus company "Yellow Line Airport Taxi" in the exit hall of the
Airport offers inexpensive transport, but may take other passengers to
addresses in the same direction on the way. For single passengers this
service is about 50% cheaper than an ordinary taxi, and the price is the
same (FIM 100) for groups of 2-4 persons. For groups of 5-8 persons, the
price is FIM 200.
There is no direct shuttle bus service from the Airport to Espoo. If
traveling by bus, take the Finnair
shuttle bus or the local bus 615
or 617 all the
way to their terminus at Helsinki Railway Station. Then walk about 300
m to Helsinki Kamppi Bus Station and take a local bus (102,
103,
194,
195)
to Otaniemi (the travel time between Helsinki and Otaniemi is about 20
minutes). In all, travel from the Airport to Otaniemi by bus will take
at least 90 minutes depending on bus schedules. Note: Only bus 102 terminates
in Otaniemi, the others just drive through and continue to other locations!
